Overview

Madrid arde a mediados de julio de 1936, por el calor del verano y por el levantamiento militar en África, que el Gobierno estima sofocar en pocos días. El abogado Nicolás Rosal intenta marcharse en coche de la capital, pero tiene que regresar tras ser interceptado por un piquete armado. Así que decide permanecer en Madrid mientras su mujer y sus dos hijos veranean en Navarra. Nicolás proviene de una familia modesta de Segovia y no encaja con la de su mujer, los Alonso, de estirpe militar e ideología carlista, que le consideran «rojo» por sus moderadas simpatías republicanas.La casualidad de ese día en que su coche no supera el control del piquete determinará su vida inmediata y le llevará a integrarse en el Madrid republicano. Guiado por nuevas relaciones y por la propia necesidad, intentará encontrar su sitio, sin saber demasiado bien cuál es.Cuando quede claro que la República está perdiendo la guerra, Nicolás tendrá que elegir entre mantenersefiel a su nuevo mundo o dejarse llevar por la corriente.
